Dempeys Cardiff

Dempsey’s is a traditional Irish pub located in the centre of Cardiff opposite Cardiff Castle.

The Interior

The pub doesn’t offer anything fancy in terms of the decor but they have a good selection of Brains beers and is very popular on match day. The pub is also home to ‘South Wales’ No.1 Celtic Supporters Club’ and the walls are decorated with shirts and memorabilia.

The main bar area is a fair size and in the corner next to the bar you can sometimes find musicians entertaining the drinkers. I visited on St Patrick’s Day this year and there was a DJ/vocalist playing popular Irish songs. There is a function room upstairs that holds regular events, in particular jazz nights.

The Beer

Beers on offer are from Brains and include Bitter, SA, Dark Smooth, 45 and the new Brains Black. As it’s an Irish pub, there is of course Guinness available. It was the first time that I had tried Brains Black and preferred it to Guinness. It had a lot more flavour to it.
