Woodin’s Shades, London

Woodin’s Shades is one of half a dozen or so pubs located in close proximity of Liverpool Street Station. Owned by Nicholsons, the pub is a standard British pub with wooden floors and high ceilings. You can expect the pub to busy on a Friday and Saturday night although when I visited on a Saturday evening there were plenty of seats available.
As with most Nicholsons pubs, the beer selection is good and reasonably priced for London. There were seven ales on tap including Otley O1 and Sharp’s Doombar.
The pub has the usual range of British food available including a wide range of sausages. Available when I visited was Lincolnshire, Wild Boar, Pork and Jaipur Ale, Lamb and Apricot and Wild Mushroom, Herbs and Black Pepper. Intrigued by the Pork and Jaipur Ale, I opted for some. At £7.45 for a small portion of 3 sausages and a small amount of lukewarm mash and gravy, it wasn’t good value for money. Plus, I couldn’t taste any Jaipur Ale in the sausages.
There is a dining area upstairs that offers a waitress service and whilst I never went upstairs, reviews on some sites suggest that there could be pool tables and a big screen available for sports up there.
Overall the pub is just average and I personally prefer the Hamilton Hall, a Wetherspoons pub, across the road. Even if you aren’t a fan of Wetherspoons, the former ballroom of the old Great Eastern Hotel that the pub occupies is worth seeing.
