Haunch Of Venison

The Haunch of Venison is one of the oldest pubs in Salisbury and according to the pub’s website, the first record of it is circa 1320 when the building was used to house craftsmen working on the nearby cathedral spire.

“At this time Minster Street had open running sewers, so entrance to the property was at the back of the building facing the Church. St Thomas’s Church had significant interest in the Haunch in the early years, even during the 14th Century when the property was reputedly a brothel and to save any embarrassment to local and visiting clergy a tunnel was built between the church and the tavern.”

Pewter Bar Top

The pub does look as old as they say it is with large oak beams throughout, old wooden doors, basic wooden furniture throughout and upper floors that are slanted. The downstairs bar very small and contains one of the last solid pewter bar tops in the country. They also have original gravity-fed spirit taps. I’m not sure if these are still operational. The beer pumps are tucked away behind the bar and feature Courage Best as well as local guest ales.

The Horse Box

At the front of the pub is a very small snug area called the Horse Box. It sits just a few people, has access to the bar and was originally meant for women to use.

As with any old pub, there are a few resident ghosts. The Haunch has two – the Grey Lady, who is searching for her child; and the Demented Whist Player who is tormented by the loss of his hand, severed in a card game due to cheating. The mummified hand is kept in a locked case in a small upper oak-panelled room called the House of Lords. Unfortunately, the hand was recently stolen. It was stolen back in March 2004 and mysteriously returned after six weeks so hopefully it will reappear soon.

Upstairs there is more room to have a drink as well as a restaurant. According to the Haunch’s website, ‘the original restaurant was created when a merchant’s house was incorporated during the 16th Century’. In the main dining room there is a working fireplace dating back to 1588. I didn’t eat during my visit, but reviews haven’t been favourable.

Also upstairs is a private bar. I didn’t see this bar but apparently it’s the only licensed landing in England.

Due to its age, the Haunch is very popuar with tourists but if you are in the area, it’s worth a visit. Just be prepared for crowds and overpriced beer and food.

Last time I visited this pub/restaurant. over 3 years ago the food was fantastic. On my visit today I had to wait 45 minutes for my order this with only a couple of tables sited, the roast beef I had was horrendous overcooked and dry the service was appalling the waitress extremal rude the experience a huge disappointment.
