The Blue Bell Inn, Annan, Scotland

The Good Beer Guide 2010 describes The Blue Bell Inn as “a long-time CAMRA favourite and award-winning real ale pub. The busy, friendly pub offers a selection of beers drawn from throughout the UK. Outside, the courtyard to the rear provides a pleasant seated are in the summer.”
I would have to disagree with a quite a lot of their review. The pub was certainly busy but it didn’t feel like a friendly pub, the courtyard is certainly not pleasant and should you need to use the toilet you will have to take your own toilet seat and toilet paper.
I’m not sure what makes the pub a long-time CAMRA favourite or award-winning. There were two ales on tap, one of which was a new wheat beer called Forth Mist from the Stewart Brewery.
The interior wasn’t too bad wood panelling throughout and seating distributed over a few levels. There were big screens showing different football matches and the fact that the pub was full of men may be a off putting to some women.

The half cobbled, half concrete rear courtyard contained a mish-mash of furniture and an odd decking area in one corner. It’s not one of the best beer gardens I’ve been in and it’s a pity that beyond the walls of the courtyard is a field with great views of the river.
My visit to The Blue Bell Inn was only brief and apart from the reasonable prices, I didn’t see anything that would make me want to return.
