Duke of Cambridge, London

The Duke of Cambridge is the first (and only) organic gastropub in the UK to achieve Soil Association accreditation.

Location and Interior

Tucked away in the backstreets of Islington, London, the Duke occupies a 140-year-old building that was restored when the pub opening in 1998.

The pub consists of a large airy room with plenty of wooden tables, chairs and long benches and additional seating outside. The windows around the pub all open fully which means on a hot day a lot of air flows through the pub.

Organic Food and Drink

Everything the pub serves is organic – the food, the soft drinks, the beer, even the whisky. The menu is seasonal and features home baked bread, home made ice cream and pickles, the fish is from sustainable sources and the meat comes from small farms where the highest standards of animal welfare are respected. The food wasn’t cheap but the whole fish that someone was eating next to me looked delicious and you are paying for high quality, responsibly sourced ingredients.

The organic beer is from Pitfield, a local London brewery, St Peter’s and Freedom. There were also some bottles available in the fridge. The Freedom lager was a little steep at £3.55 a pint but that’s probably down to the area the pub is located in.
