The Dovetail, London

The Interior
When you enter The Dovetail, it’s like entering a a bar in Belgium. The interior is dark with square stone tiles throughout along with wooden chairs and tables. The seats in the rear of the pub have ‘arches’ behind them similar to something you’d expect to find in a Belgian monastery. Outside in the alleyway there are a few tables but if it’s not raining you are welcome to stand with your drink.
The pub is very popular particularly at lunchtime which was when I visited. It attracts a lot of people for food and it serves a variety of traditional British dishes, soups and sandwiches along with food cooked with beer such as Leffe. Being located in Clerkenwell it is far enough away from the City so you are likely to find journalists rather than ‘suits’.
The Beer
The Dovetail serves a huge range of Belgian beers – around 10 on draught and 100 bottles in the fridges. To help you decide they have produced a handy beer menu.
I opted for one of my favourite Belgian beers, Rodenbach, but with so many good beers I could easily have gone for a Duvel Green or the strong Delerium Tremens.
I’m not sure of the prices of the beers but as some of these beers are hard to find in pubs, particularly the beers on draught, you should expect to pay more than an ale or lager in a standard pub. Their website has a price list but I’m not sure how accurate it is.
When to Visit
Surprisingly, The Dovetail is open on both Saturdays and Sundays when most pubs in the area are closed. If you do pay a visit on a weekday, make sure you also visit the St Peters Brewery owned Jerusalem Tavern which is just a short walk south.
