Hare on the Hill, Bristol
Posted on 24. Aug, 2010 by Robert Gale in Pubs

Brief History
It was Bath Ales’ first pub (they now own 10 in Bristol and Bath) and opened in 1996 (that date is based on an article from the Autumn 2001 issue of Pints West which mentions that the pub was close to it’s fifth anniversary). I’m not sure how old the pub is but according to a comment on Beer in the Evening, the pub was known as the Masons Arms in 1986.
The Interior
A past Bristol CAMRA Pub of the Year winner, the pub has a smart interior that was refurbished in in 2009. The interior is very similar the Salamander pub in Bath with wood throughout and a simple green wooden bar. Like the Salamander, the pub is relatively small with tables dotted around the pub.
When I visited on a Saturday afternoon in August, I was the only one in the pub so I’m not sure how busy it gets at night. It may have just been that particular day as the nearby Hillgrove was also quiet.
The Beer
Although a few years ago, according to Beer in the Evening, the Hare used to have guest ales, they now only serve Bath Ales, stout and cider on tap. They do, however, have a good range of bottled European beers and whiskies. When I visited there were three ales available although there is room for 5.
With the Hillgrove Porter Stores being located almost next door, the Hare on the Hill is worth the 10-15 minute walk from the city centre.
