The Wellington, Birmingham

Location
The pub, affectionately known as The Welly, is located just a short walk and New Street Railway Station and just around the corner from Birmingham Cathedral and the excellent Fullers pub, the Old Joint Stock. Open daily between 10am and midnight, the pub is generally busy throughout the day, especially when Birmingham or Aston Villa are playing at home. On my visit the pub was jam packed by 10:45am.
Interior
The pub occupies an unassuming town house on Bennett’s Hill. Inside there is one large room with the long bar in the centre. The front and rear of the pub has plenty of seating although they do get full quickly. The interior is clean and comfortable but not as grand as the Old Joint Stock or Old Contemptibles.
Apart from some really good traditional pork scratchings, the Welly does not serve food although they are more than happy for you to bring your own and even provide cutlery and condiments.
The Beer
The Wellington is the type of pub where you could visit 7 days a week and be guaranteed to try something different. The fact that there are 16 handpumps indicates that the Welly gets through a lot of beer. They feature breweries from all over the UK with beers from ones such as Purity, Wye Valley, Black Country, Blue Monkey and Cottage always being available. Prices are reasonable with pints ranging from around £2.60 to £3.40.
As the pub gets busy and there are so many beers to choose from they have a virtual beer blackboard in the form of a big screen TV that lists all beers currently available. Rather than ordering by name, you simply order by number. You can also view the current beer selection on their website along with the many, many casks they have stored in the cellar.
As well as the 16 ales, they also sell 3 traditional ciders, UK and foreign lagers such as Freedom and Bitburger and a good selection of foreign bottled beers.
