The Inn at Freshford, Freshford

Brief History
According to research by Alan Dodge on the pub’s website, the pub is thought to date from the 16th century and probably before the Reformation.
Being just six mile from Bath the river crossing was important and there has been a bridge near the current site of the pub since perhaps the 1300s. It was totally rebuilt in 1530 and 1782.
You can read more about the history of the pub on the Inn at Freshford website.
Interior
The interior has both a traditional and modern look and feel with wooden floors, original beams and a large open fireplace to keep warm in the winter.
The central bar is located near the entrance and is stone with a wooden top. There is plenty of seating throughout and whilst it appears to be more suited to be a restaurant, you can still go there for a few pints.
The Beer
The pub is owned by the Box Steam Brewery so you can expect the full range from the brewery. When I visited there were around 4 or 5 beers available. The beers produced by Box Steam are excellent so you won’t be disappointed that there aren’t any beers available from other breweries.
Food
There is a full menu available and they sell some excellent sandwiches at lunchtime. I had a cheese and pickle sandwich which at just under £6 isn’t cheap but with really thick slices of bread and cheese, it was one of the best cheese and pickle sandwiches I’ve had.
Visiting the Pub
The pub is about 10 minutes walk from Freshford railway station. Trains are fairly frequent and it’s only a short distance north to Bath. One stop south is Avoncliff where another Box Steam Brewery pub, the Cross Guns, is located. This is a request stop and not all trains stop there.
