The House of the Trembling Madness, York
Posted on 10. Mar, 2011 by Robert Gale in Pubs

Brief History and Interior
Located on historic Stonegate in the centre of York, the House of the Trembling Madness is situated inside a medieval hall that dates from around 1180 (source). Previously the Beams Tearooms, it was converted into a beer house in early 2010 and since opening has become a huge success.
Located on the top storey, the pub doesn’t have it’s own entrance, instead access is via a staircase towards the rear of The Bottle beer shop. The only indication that the pub exists is a House of Trembling Madness sign in the window.
Upstairs is a high-ceilinged room with lots of exposed beams, antique benches and tables and a tiny but well stocked bar. Whilst there is plenty of seating, due to its popularity, you may find yourself sharing a table.
Beer and Food
The beer selection is excellent and features more continental beers and US beers than UK beers. On tap on the tiny bar when I visited in March, 2011 was Kwak, Timmermans Strawberry, Brooklyn Lager, Jever, La Trappe and Aspall Cider.
Behind the bar are well-stocked refridgerators featuring a huge mix of beers including more unusual beers such as guezes and smoked beers.
Prices are very reasonable and many beers, especially those on tap, come with branded glassware.
Behind the bar is a small kitchen area where the bar staff prepare some excellent snacks such as meat and cheese platters and toasted sandwiches. These are very reasonably priced and the portions are large.
Due to the small kitchen area and the fact that the meals are prepared by the bar staff, there can be a wait for food at busy times.
