History and Interior
Awarded the Bath Town Pub of the Year award in 2008, the pub is located in a building that dates back to the 18th century and it has probably been a pub for the past 250 years. Located on Green Street, a small street that runs between Broad and Millsom Street, the pub has a simple frontage with two chalkboards listing the beers and food available that day.
Inside, the pub consists of three very small wood panelled rooms. As you enter the lounge is accessible via a door on the left. This room contains a variety of seating and a fireplace. It also has a doorway where you can order drinks from the bar.
Further ahead down the small entrance hallway is a doorway leading to the bar. The bar containing 5 hand pumps is located on the left. Apart from a few stools, it is standing room only in the bar area and it doesn’t take many people to cause a crowd.
In the left corner is another doorway leading to the old smoke room. Another wood panelled room, it has a variety of seating and a small fireplace at the rear.
The Beer
The pub always features a good selection of beers (up to 5) from local breweries and you can always includes a stout or porter. When I visited in March 2011, the beers were RCH Pitchfork, Hopback Entire Stout, St George’s Charger, Butcombe Bitter and beer brewed for the pub. Also available were 2 ciders and one lager (Budweiser Budvar).
Visiting the Pub
The pub has a very traditional feel to it and due to its diminutive size, it’s not the place to go for a quiet drink. This is the type of pub where you are likely to mingle with both locals and tourists.
