The Bear Inn, Oxford

The Bear Inn is an historic Fullers-owned pub located in the centre of Oxford just off the busy High Street.

Brief History and Interior

The Bear Inn, or just The Bear, is one of Oxford’s oldest pubs. According to an entry on Wikipedia, the pub dates back to 1242 but this is probably doubtful. The present building was built in the early 17th century as the residence of the inn’s ostler.

The three storey pub is located on the corner of Alfred Street, Bear Lane and Blue Boar Street. There are two entrances, the main entrance being located on Alfred Street and a smaller side entrance being located on Blue Boar Street. Inside, the diminutive pub has just two small rooms and a tiny drinking area.

The front of the pub contains a small bar that’s accessible from both the small drinking area near the main entrance and the slightly large front room. With it’s low beamed ceiling, stone walls and floorboards, this part of the pub feels a lot older than the larger wood panelled room to the rear of the pub.

Throughout the pub the walls (and the ceiling in the rear room) are decorated with thousands of ties dating back to the early 1900s and representing clubs in the Oxford area and beyond.

The Beer

As the pub is operated by Fullers you can expect the usual beers such as Chiswick and London Pride as well as a Gales beer. When I visited in April 2011 there was also a local guest beer available.

Visiting the Pub

I visited the pub on a Saturday afternoon and despite being located in the city centre it wasn’t as busy as other pubs such as the White Horse. The pub featured in the detective series Inspector Morse so it is usually a stop on tours of the city.
