About PSBH
With perhaps the highest concentration of city centre pubs in the UK you’d think there would be no more room for another but that would only be the case if you were to open a pub that’s the same as the rest. But in January 2011, the Port Street Beer House (PSBH) opened its doors with the promise of offering the best cask, keg and bottled beers from the UK and beyond.
PSBH is run by Johnny Heyes who has achieved great success with the independent café bar, Common, also located in the city. The pub is located slightly off the beaten track but that is part of the aim. When you are selling such a good selection of beers, word spreads and and so far this has been the case. Like other forward thinking pubs, the PSBH is active on Twitter and constantly updates its followers with the latest beers on offer.
The Interior
The modern interior has wooden flooring throughout and modern seating. Spread over two floors and with a beer garden to the rear, the PSBH is far from being the biggest of pubs but the cosy nature means you are more likely to strike up a conversation with people who are there for one main reason – the excellent beer selection.
The Beer
The selection of beer on offer is extremely impressive. There are seven permanent hand pulls featuring breweries such as Thornbridge, Hardknott Prospect, Elland, Ramsgate and more.
The choice of keg beers is bewildering and features a dedicated Brew Dog and Erdinger font (the Erdinger is a fantastic wooden one), plus grand t-bars featuring fruit beers, American imports, Belgian beers and a German smoked beer.
Two six-foot fridges are well stocked with bottled beers from the UK and beyond as well as cider from Gwynt y Ddraig.
This is the type of pub where you can easily spend a good few hours working through the impressive selection.
