Henry’s 12th Street Tavern is a large pub located in downtown Portland. It serves an impressive 100 different beers from the Pacific Northwest and beyond.

Brief History and Location

Henry’s is located on 12th street in downtown Portland. the pub is housed inside the Henry Weinhard Brewery Complex, a large block wide building that since 2000 has been on the US National Register of Historic Places.

Henry Weinhard purchased a brewery on the site called the City Brewery in 1864 and quickly expanded to nearby blocks. The brewery turned into somewhat of an empire owning a variety of properties from San Francisco and Canada and exporting beer around the world. By 1890, 100,000 barrels a year were being produced annually.

The present building was completed in 1908 and brewed beer on the site until 1999 when the Miller Brewing Co. (the owners at the time) moved operations to the Olympia Brewery in Turnwater, WA. As soon as brewing stopped, the building was put up for sale.

The building was purchased the following year and the brewhouse’s historical importance was recognised with a listing on the National Registry of Historic Places. A 2-year renovation followed and the brewhouse was converted into offices, retail and apartments. Henry’s 12th Street Tavern opened in 2003.

Interior

Henry’s is probably one of the largest pubs in Portland and is spread across two floors. The entrance is located in the spacious restaurant area and to the left is a separate bar area with plenty of additional seating. The large island bar is well stocked and has an interesting feature in the form of a strip of ice on the bar where you can place your glass to keep the contents cold.

Upstairs is a lounge containing another bar and numerous pool tables.

The Beer

Henry’s stocks around 100 beers on tap and the selection is handily categorised by style in a beer menu. Some may say that the there’s nothing particularly rare or unusual but everyone should find something that they will like.
