The Cheese Bar began life as cheese counter in Square Deal Wine (now closed) in northwest Portland. Steve’s Cheese was considered Portland’s premiere cheese counter and back in early 2010, the owner, Steve Jones, decided to move across town to bigger premises and also expand their offerings. In March 2010 the Cheese Bar opened opened selling a range of cheese, charcuterie and specialty grocery products.
What’s On Offer
Part grocery store, part bar/café/meeting place, the Cheese Bar sells a mix of cheese plates. meat plates, sandwiches and delicious soups. In addition, 15 taps dispense a great mix of US beers and there are also dozens of bottles to drink inside or take away.
Located at 6031 SE Belmont St, the Cheese Bar is on the corner of a residential block that’s around a 20-30 minute bus ride from downtown Portland. The interior is simple with a small number of tables and chairs and stools at the bar. The well stocked cheese and meat counter is situated on the left with the bar to the rear. On the right at the back is a mixture of specialty grocery items and bottled beers.
Steve is an excellent cheesemonger and is more than happy to help you select the right cheese. The staff have been trained well so that their also able to help with any questions.
Open all day Tuesday-Sunday, the Cheese Bar is a must visit whilst in Portland and whilst there, you may also want to check out the nearby Horse Brass Pub and Belmont Station.
