The Wellington, Strand, London

Brief History and Interior
The original pub was constructed in 1848 and rebuilt in 1903 by Bird & Walter and was one of the last of the 74 pubs that they built. The neo-gothic exterior extends over 6 floors but the majority of the pub interior is housed only the ground floor (there is a restaurant with tables that can booked on the first floor).
According to London by Pub, the Wellington has some original features including the carved wooden bar-back and door lobbies. There is a grand sculpted plaster ceiling and the large marble fireplace and multicoloured marble wall around it were once covered by layers of wallpaper until being discovered during a restoration in 1988.
Due to being located on the edge of Covent Garden and next to the Lyceum Theatre the pub can get busy. There are plenty of seats outside if it’s not too cold or wet and it would be a great spot to observe the bustle of London.
The Beer
The pub is part of the Nicholson’s chain of pubs and like the majority pubs in its portfolio, the selection of beers is good. Seven hand pumps are available and when I visited all were in use.
Regulars like Fullers London Pride, Sharp’s Doom Bar and St Austell Tribute are always available and Thornbridge Jaipur is quite often on offer. Also available when I visited was Pica Pica from Thornbridge, Double Dark from Caledonian and Brentwood Blonde from Brentwood.
