The Angel, London

The Angel is a Samuel Smith pub located on Saint Giles High Street not too far from Soho and the eastern end of Oxford Street.

Brief History and Location

Located a short walk from Tottenham Court Road station, the pub, according to Ted Bruning, was built in 1898 and was known as the Bowl. The excellent resource Dead Pubs has traced the history of the pub back to 1841 and lists many of the owners and barmaids that worked there.

Until the 1990s, the pub was owned by the Courage Brewery and according to Bruning was significantly run down. The Samuel Smith brewery purchased the pub in the late 1990s and refurbished it.

The Interior and Exterior

From the outside the pub is far from inviting and its difficult to tell whether the pub is open or not. There are two entrances to the pub, a doorway on the left which leads to one bar and a side passage that leads to another. The gated side passage is unusual in that both walls are tiled creating a sheltered drinking area and providing access to a small rear yard.

The interior is split into three, a carpeted saloon bar accessed from the passage, a public bar complete with small bar and darts board accessed from the road and a tiny snug to the rear.

Interestingly, the rooms are not directly connected so should you find yourself in the saloon bar and require the toilet you have to exit the pub via the passageway, walk around the front of the pub and access the public bar through another door.

The Beer

As with all Samuel Smith pubs, the beer, lager, cider and in fact everything else is from the brewery. Original Brewery Bitter is available on cask and the usual excellent bottles such as the Pale Ale and Oatmeal Stout are available in bottles.

Prices are generally cheap for the area in particular the Original Brewery Bitter. Like all Samuel Smith pubs, the bottled ales are expensive and you won’t get much change from a fiver.
