The Cock Tavern, London

The Cock Tavern is the sister pub of the excellent Southampton Arms in Kentish Town. Opened in July, 2012, the Cock Tavern serves a large number of both keg and cask beers and traditional ciders.

Brief History

There has been pub called the Cock in Hackney as early as 1561 and according to Pubs History, the current pub can be traced back as far as 1737 when it was mentioned in the Hackney Petty Sessions Book.

The exterior clearly identifies the pub’s previous owners, London’s Trumans Brewery. According to Pubs and Beer, the brewery rebuilt the pub in the 1930s.

The Interior

Stripped back to the bare basics, there are creaky floorboards throughout, a simple bar, old pews and stools with some seriously heavyweight cast iron bases. The interior is very similar to the pubs older sister, the Southampton Arms, but is perhaps a little too bare, maybe lacking a bit of character and depending on where you sit, a bit uncomfortable.

The Beer

An impressive 16 hand pumps and 8 keg taps dominate the bar dispensing an ever-changing selection of beers and traditional cider. Cask ales available when I visited in August were from Marble, Thornbridge, Red Willow, Gadd and Magic Rock and on keg were beers from Brew Dog, Magic Rock, Kernel, Brodies, Camden and Thornbridge.

You’ll also usually find a beer or two from the Howling Hops brewery, a tiny microbrewery housed in the cellar of the pub that uses equipment used by Camden Brewery when they started brewing. A very fresh 5% Gold No. 1 was available during my visit.

An excellent selction of ales and ciders, all served in reassuringly old-fashioned pint mugs. Some of the offerings are simply superb.
