The Hunters Moon, Llangattock Lingoed, Wales
Posted on 24. Mar, 2010 by Robert Gale in Pubs

The Hunters Moon is a 13th Century pub located in the hamlet of Llangattock Lingoed near the border between Wales and England. The nearest town is Abergavenny which is about a 15 minute drive away. The pub is not easy to get down and involves driving along some narrow single track roads.
I visited on a quiet Sunday afternoon and had a great chat about with the landlord about the history of the pub. He said that records from the church next door show that the house was constructed in 1217. At the time the church hadn’t been built (records show a church being there in 1254) and it is thought that the house may have been built for workers who were working on the church.
The landlord said that some parts of the pub are original including parts of the restaurant. The building containing the bar is more modern and apparently used to be a cider mill.

The pub is popular with locals including the many farmers in the area. Wye Valley HPA is always available as well as one guest. Jacks Spring Ale from the Cottage Brewery was available when I visited. Black Rat cider is available and according to the landlord was added just for a local who used to buy it from Abergavenny by the barrel load.
Across the road is a large beer garden complete with picnic tables and a pond. It would be a perfect place for a summer pint. And if you have a few too many, you can stay in one of the pubs five en-suite rooms. Rates are £65 per night and include a two-course breakfast.

If you do get to visit the pub, it is worth visiting the church next door. It has a large 15th century medieval wall painting, 17th and 18th century pews and a rare parish bier that was used to carry the dead.
Also, if you are a fan of walking, the pub is located on Offa’s Dyke Path and the footpath runs within 50 yards of the inn.
