A Little History
The tavern is located on the main street that runs through Dubois and according to this website was built in 1919 and a photo on the site from 1939 shows that apart from the Steakhouse, which was added at a later date, the building looks exactly the same today.
The tavern originally operated as a pool hall with boarding rooms upstairs and was known as the Hiway Café or the Hiway Pool Hall until a bar was added in 1939. It was then that it was renamed the Rustic Pine Tavern. [source: PDF]

The Interior
A sign outside boasts that the tavern is ‘The World’s Most Unique’ but it doesn’t say what makes it unique. It may be the fact that the walls are decorated with numerous animals including an elk and a moose or it could be that there are regular square dances held there throughout the summer.
My guess is that it’s because the interior is made almost entirely of wood including the very impressive carved bar that looks like the side of a log cabin and comes complete with roof. The bar dates from 1935 when the interior of the tavern was decorated with the distinctive knotty pine panelling that still covers the walls today.
The Beer
As I was driving and I visited at 11am, I didn’t drink. I did check out the beers that were available and apart from the usual lager and Guinness, they served New Belgium Fat Tire and Snake River Lager from the Snake River Brewery in Jackson, WY.
