Ye Olde George Inn, Christchurch

Ye Olde George Inn is a Grade-II listed coaching inn located in the heart of Christchurch, just a short walk away from the historic priory church.

Brief History

The owners of the pub claim that the pub dates from the 14th century although I haven’t found any evidence to back this up. The pub is certainly old and is one of two listed public houses in the town centre although the Ship Inn has the oldest licence in the town.

A plaque on the top of the building says that the pub was first referred to in records as the St George in 1630 and is the oldest surviving inn in the town. The Ship’s history can be traced back to 1688.

There is also a mention of smugglers being associated with the pub which is quite possible as they were associated with the town and the Ship Inn.

According to Wikipedia, the pub was once called the George and Dragon and was a coach house where the Emerald coach would stop on its way from Lymington to Poole. The old timber framed building was refaced with brick in the early 18th century and some of the glazing dates back to the 19th century.

The Interior

Affectionately known as the YOGI, the Olde George Inn consists of a paved courtyard that’s accessible through the front door. On the left side is the bar area which is split into two rooms. One room contains a simple looking bar along with an open fire, comfortable chairs and a couple of tables. There are wooden beams throughout, a stone floor and one area has a selection of chamberpots hanging from the ceiling. Next to the bar is a room that’s more suitable for dining.

The building on the right as you enter the pub is used for the toilets and kitchen.

The courtyard and larger area behind the pub has outdoor seating and is heated in places.

The Beer and Food

The pub is owned by the Dorset Piddle, a Christchurch based brewery. The pub was the original tap for the brewery and as such you can find a good selection of their beers.

When I visited there were three Piddle Brewery beers available – Jimmy Riddle, Piddle and Silent Slasher. There were also two guests available – Stonehenge Great Bustard and St Austell Tribute.

I didn’t eat at the George but the food has had some favourable reviews – ViewBournemouth review, Christchurch Eye review, Christchurch People review.

Most weekends of the year you can find him travelling around the UK (and sometimes beyond) photographing and reviewing good quality pubs and beer festivals.
