Guy Fawkes Inn, York

Brief History and Interior
The Guy Fawkes Inn proudly displays some custom-made ‘blue plaques’ boasting that the famous co-conspirator who tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605 was born there in 1570. A comment on a news article suggests that this may not be entirely true and around the corner on Stonegate, a similar plaque declares that he was born on that street.
However, Guy was born indeed born in that part of York and was baptised in 1570 in St Michael le Belfry across the road from the pub so it is quite plausible that he could have been born there.
The Interior
Standing in the shadow of the impressive York Minster, the Grade II* listed building dates from 1700-1707 (source). The Times suggests that there were buildings there before and possibly as far back as the 15th century.
The interior is split into three area, a small bar at the front, a more comfortable lounge to the right and a dining area to the rear. The pub also has 13 rooms available both in the building and across a courtyard to the rear. You can read a review of the rooms from 2009.
The pub is certainly dark and there is a no shortage of dark wood throughout the pub along with dark brown walls and timber floors. Gas mantle lighting is still used in parts of the building including the bar area. Seating is limited in the bar area and there is a single table. The lounge area is larger and also has a large open fireplace.
The Beer
The small bar has 6 handpulls featuring mainly local beers. Dark Force Treason from Great Heck appears to be a permanent beer and others that were on when I visited in March 2011 were Skipton Copper Dragon Black Gold, Daleside IPA, Rudgate Ruby Mild, Black Sheep Bitter and Wold Top Spring Fling. Leffe was also available on tap.
